STREAMING EXPLAINER

IPTV vs OTT: compare the service, not just the label.

IPTV and OTT describe ways that video reaches viewers. Their meanings overlap, and neither term tells you the exact content, price or rights of an offer.

What IPTV means

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. It describes television delivered over networks using internet protocol. Depending on the provider, a service may include scheduled live channels, on-demand video, or a mix.

What OTT means

Over-the-top (OTT) generally describes video delivered to viewers over the public internet without requiring a traditional cable or satellite TV connection. Subscription video apps, ad-supported services and some live-TV services can all be described as OTT.

Why the terms can overlap

An IPTV service can also be delivered over the public internet and therefore fit common uses of OTT. Providers may use the labels differently, so ask how the service works, whether it is live or on-demand, which devices are supported and what the plan includes.
